*******************************************
Loon Point is 12 miles from Bangor and the same from Ellsworth and 35 miles from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, the most beloved and most visted national park on the east coast.
There is something very peaceful about this roomy, three bedroom house
called Loon Point on lake Lucerne (Phillip's lake)
where we lived for 10 years -- when sitting on the deck, it seems to one
that the house and land are one piece of a much larger whole. Our property is half of a point of land, and curls 100s of feet back
to the right, ending in shallow, sheltered water which each summer is birthplace
to loons and ducklings.
The house is sheltered, hidden from the roadway, but upon entering the house from the drive and garden at the rear, you are drawn to the large picture windows in the "great room," and it seems that your entire being is pulled outward, merging every atom with those in the trees, lake, and sky.
This lake is glacial, and it nestles between high ridges of land that continue northwest to Canada. The glacier that shaped much of the Maine coast rested for millions of years at this location, slowly melting and thereby releasing from its grip enormous boulders that had been carried along from what would become Canada. These boulders, known to geologists as "glacial erratics," rest along the shore and in the lake.
The float and walkway are attached to perfect examples of these passengers of the glacier, and with their sloping orientation towards the north, the "erratics" attest to the tumbling and scraping action of the glacier. Underwater, similar boulders such as these lie like so many leaves on the floor of the lake. (Unfortunately the boat does not come with the house.)
On the float is one of our adirondac chairs, made by a local craftsman from a hundred-year old design given to him. Early in the morning, we would sit on the float or on the deck and enjoy the stillness and peace; in the evening, we could be found in the same locations, awaiting the return of the loons or the ducks to the cove beside us.
